Needs Analysis
A Needs Analysis allows the design team to formulate a framework, establish system boundaries, and identify limitations. Parameters should include coverage, capacity (minimum throughput per user), equipment, apps, or programs that will be using the WLAN, amount of voice and video traffic to be handled, and the physical characteristics of the facility.
BANDWIDTH:
To determine the bandwidth your company will need, estimate the number of users expected to use the network at any one time and the activities they will be performing.
A general rule to consider is that your network should deliver approximately 90 percent of the bandwidth promised by your Internet Service Provider.
ACCESS POINTS
Install wireless access points where they are least likely to cause radio interference. Avoid metal structures; for instance, just under a metal roof or near metal beams, which often interfere with your signal.
SECURITY
In any business, it is prudent to run one network for your business functions and one for guests. At the least, your internal business network should be password-protected. When you begin setting up your network, change the default passwords of your access points right away.
SUPPORT
Before setting up your network, determine who is responsible for supporting it. For example: How do users report problems? Who responds when someone has trouble connecting? In addition, spell out restrictions users will need to agree to before being allowed to connect.
The next part of the Strategic Planning process involves a Site Analysis.
