Time Table
Though setting up and configuring a wireless network is fairly straightforward and can be configured in a matter of hours or days, depending on the size of your home or business, it's prudent to put together a time table to ensure that no steps are overlooked.
The following is an example of what could be included in a typical timeline from conception to implementation of a wireless network. In all, the process could take from a few weeks to a year for a small business, depending on the complexity of equipment, the number of users, and the security measures being put in place.
1. IDENTIFY EQUIPMENT
These can include access points, wireless LAN adapters and wireless cards.
2. ESTIMATE USERS
This will help you determine the number of access points you'll need.
3. SITE ANALYSIS
Your goal is to maximize the access point's wireless range. Complete a site survey first; if that's not possible, assume a maximum range of 150 feet, as the typical range of 300 feet can vary depending on obstacles.
4. CONFIGURE DEVICES
5. TEST
Check the percent of data sent correctly, response time, and the strength of the transmitted signal.
6. ESTABLISH PROCEDURES
Implement wireless-specific security measures.
7. TRAIN USERS
Be sure to give your users a way to provide feedback. Easily corrected problems often go unreported simply because users don't know that the WLAN isn't behaving normally.
8. ENLIST SUPPORT
Determine if your office will contract with a company who can provide 24/7 support or if the business intends to provide its own support team.
The next step in the Strategic Plan process is Policies.
